Overdetermination and Causal Closure: A Defense of the Causal Argument for Physicalism

چکیده
Among the arguments that have been proposed for physicalism, “causal argument” is widely taken to be most compelling. Justin Tiehen (2015) has raised an interesting objection this argument takes form of a dilemma. Tiehen’s ultimate conclusion at best, causal circular and so its premises cannot provide support conclusion, physicalism. The aim present paper respond in order defense argument.

Causal overdetermination for Humeans?
The paper argues against systematic overdetermination being an acceptable solution to the problem of mental causation within a Humean counterfactual theory of causation. The truthmakers of the counterfactuals in question include laws of nature, and there are laws that support physical to physical counterfactuals, but no laws in the same sense that support mental to physical counterfactuals.
متن کاملCausal Closure of Physics and the Formulation of Physicalism
Physicalism is an ontological doctrine according to which everything in the world is physical in the last instance. This is usually interpreted as a claim that every non-physical, most notably every mental property can either be reduced to some physical property or shown to supervene on it. The main obstacle in an attempt to formulate physicalism properly is Hempel’s dilemma, and the most promi...
متن کاملInterventionist Causal Exclusion and Non-reductive Physicalism
The first part of this paper presents an argument showing that the currently most highly acclaimed interventionist theory of causation, i.e. the one advanced by Woodward, excludes supervening macro properties from having a causal influence on effects of their micro supervenience bases. Moreover, this interventionist exclusion argument is demonstrated to rest on weaker premises than classical ex...
متن کاملClosure, Causal
8 In biological systems, closure refers to a holistic fea9 ture such that their constitutive processes, operations, 10 and transformations (1) depend on each other for their 11 production and maintenance and (2) collectively con12 tribute to determine the conditions at which the whole 13 ▶ organization can exist. 14 According to several theoretical biologists, the con15 cept of closure captures...
متن کاملThe Overdetermination Argument Revisited
In this paper I discuss a famous argument for physicalism – which some authors indeed regard as the only argument for it – the “overdetermination argument”. In fact it is an argument that does not establish that all the entities in the world are physical, but that all those events that enter into causal transactions with the physical world are physical. As mental events seem to cause changes in...
